Blue Lights creators working on new political thriller D-Notice
It will air on BBC One and iPlayer
Last updated 24th Feb 2026
The makers behind huge BBC shows Blue Lights and The Salisbury Poisonings are working on a new political thriller, entitled D-Notice. Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn will join forces again, to bring us the new drama, which will delve into the world of investigative journalism and national security.
It comes after the news that Blue Lights will return for a fourth series later this year.
Having worked as investigative journalists for the BBC’s Panorama, the pair are being described as the perfect producers and directors for the job.
In an interview with Deadline, BBC drama boss Lindsay Salt described the new project as a ‘juicy conspiracy theory’. It’s the first to be created by Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn’s new Belfast-based production company, Hot Sauce Pictures, which is backed by Sony.
When will it be released?
It’s been reported D-Notice is in the early stages, so there’s no more details about when it might be released just yet.
What channel will D-Notice be on?
It will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
What is a D-Notice?
It’s a confidential media advisory that the Government can send to journalists to request discretion when publishing content which could endanger national security.
What will the plot be?
Based on what we know about D-Notices, it’s likely the show will focus on the relationship between journalists and the Government, and how they work together to protect the country from threats.
