Dust off your pink slip dress and dig out the Razzles! One of the 2000s’ most beloved rom-coms is about to get a very modern glow-up.
Netflix is lining up a new take on the body-swap favourite, with a fresh creative team, a fan-approved director and a pair of rising stars in the central love story. Millennials, this reimagining is aiming squarely for your inner teenager.
The streamer shared cast images of the leads, alongside the film's former star, Jennifer Garner, who executive produces the reboot, and its director Brett Haley.
What is the original 13 Going on 30 about?
2004's 13 Going On 30 follows awkward teen Jenna Rink, who makes a desperate birthday wish and wakes up as her 30-year-old self in New York City, suddenly thrown into a high-powered magazine job, a glossy Manhattan life and friendships she barely recognises.
The fantasy rom-com starred Jennifer Garner as adult Jenna, with Christa B. Allen as 13-year-old Jenna and Mark Ruffalo as her sweet, long-suffering best friend Matt.
What happens in the reboot?
Plot details for the new 13 Going On 30 are being kept firmly under wraps for now. The reboot will be directed by Brett Haley from a script by Hannah Marks, with revisions by Flora Greeson, promising a fresh but romantic spin on the fantasy setup.
Who is in the new cast?
The reboot lines up Emily Bader in the Jenna Rink role, reuniting her with director Brett Haley after their Netflix rom-com People We Meet on Vacation spent four weeks on the streamer’s Global Top 10 Movies (English). Emily has also starred in Prime Video’s My Lady Jane and mob drama Fresh Kills, and is set to play football legend Mia Hamm in Netflix drama The 99’ers.
Logan Lerman is on board as her romantic counterpart, fresh from dark comedy Oh, Hi! and a recent run on Only Murders in the Building season five.
In a statement to Deadline about the reboot, Brett said: "13 Going on 30 is one of those rare, perfect films. Funny, emotional, deeply human, with unforgettable performances from Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo and Judy Greer. I’m a longtime fan, so stepping into this reimagining comes with tremendous responsibility."
The director added: "Jennifer Garner being on board as an executive producer, after playing such a big part of what made the original special, is especially meaningful. I also couldn’t be more excited to reunite with Emily Bader after People We Meet on Vacation. She and the amazingly talented Logan Lerman are a magical pairing. I feel incredibly lucky to be trusted with something that means so much to so many people."
When is the reboot out?
Netflix and the producers have not announced a release date yet for the 13 Going On 30 reboot. With the cast only just assembling, expect more details further down the line as production progresses.
Where can I watch it?
The new reboot is being made for Netflix, so it will stream exclusively on the platform when it’s released. The original 13 Going On 30 was a Columbia Pictures theatrical title, but this new version is designed as a global Netflix rom-com.
