Yorkshire Water has commenced a £1.8 million upgrade of its wastewater pumping station at Cowbar breakwater in Staithes, North Yorkshire.

Situated adjacent to the RNLI Lifeboat station, the pumping station plays a critical role in transporting wastewater flows to the Hinderwell treatment site.

Contract partners Mott MacDonald Bentley will install larger pumps, replace a wastewater holding tank, and renew existing pipework within the station.

Work is anticipated to conclude in September 2026.

Yorkshire Water say efforts to minimise disruption to local residents, businesses, and visitors have been prioritised, with access routes avoiding coastal roads prone to erosion. Teams will access the site via the high street and harbour sands, guided by marshals ensuring traffic management.

The nearby lifeboat station will continue its operations uninterrupted throughout the project duration.

Mitchell Dunkley, project manager at Yorkshire Water, emphasized the importance of the upgrade: “The upgrade to the pumping station at Staithes is one of several upgrades to our wastewater treatment network that we will be completing by 2030."
