Construction has begun on a major new development at York Hospital that will bring faster, more advanced care to patients across the region.

The £8 million project includes a cutting-edge hybrid theatre and a modern MRI suite, designed to improve access to complex vascular procedures and high-quality diagnostic imaging.

Once complete, the facility will allow for quicker scans, shorter waiting times, and enhanced care for patients on cancer pathways and those needing urgent or routine imaging.

The hybrid theatre will enable more intricate surgical work with real-time imaging, while the new MRI scanner — compatible with future AI technologies — will provide sharper, faster results in a calm, patient-friendly setting.

Liz Hill, Associate Chief Operating Officer for Surgery at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“This is an exciting development for York Hospital. It means we can treat more patients using the latest diagnostic and vascular technology, and provide a better experience for both patients and staff.”

Karen Priestman, Associate Chief Operating Officer for Cancer, Specialist and Clinical Support Services, at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, added:

“This new MRI scanner is a state-of-the-art machine that delivers highly detailed imaging at impressive speed. It will make a significant difference to waiting times, which is vital as demand for MRI has been growing and we’ve simply not had the capacity to meet it.

“We’re also planning to upgrade two additional MRI machines, which will further expand access for patients. Looking ahead, the new scanner is compatible with artificial intelligence technologies, paving the way for even more advanced diagnostics in the future.”
