As the cold snap continues people are being encouraged to use North Yorkshire's warm banks.

Josie Knowles runs one in York: "At Saint Deny's Church Hall, we don't have labels. Everybody comes in and mucks in and helps each other. You're giving by putting the kettle on. You know, if you come along and you bring a tin of beans, that's absolutely fine but you don't have to bring anything.

"I've seen by people come in here, they share their skills, they share humour, they get up and support each other and they make great headway.

"We provide a warm meal that's reasonably sourced so that you can come out, come to a warm place, have a warm meal and have a bit of respite or just a little bit of banter and encouragement."

Her message comes as an amber weather warning for ice and snow has come into force across North Yorkshire.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: "The forecasted temperatures can have a serious impact on the health of some people, including those aged 65 and over and those with pre-existing health conditions, and it is therefore vital to check in on friends, family and neighbours that are most vulnerable.

"These people could be more at risk of heart attacks, stroke and chest infections as a result of cold temperatures."
