North Yorkshire launches consultation on maximum taxi fares

Council seeks public feedback to balance fair pay for drivers with affordable travel for passengers

People are being invited to share their views on taxi fares as part of a newly launched public consultation by North Yorkshire Council.

The consultation will review the maximum fares taxi drivers can charge, with the goal of striking a fair balance between affordability for passengers and fair pay for drivers. These maximum rates are periodically reviewed to reflect changes in the cost of living and vehicle operation.

The fares under review represent the maximum drivers can charge—they are permitted to offer lower rates at their discretion. The cap does not apply to private hire vehicles (such as those booked in advance), which set their own fares independently. In those cases, passengers are encouraged to confirm the cost of their journey before travelling.

Cllr Greg White, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for licensing, emphasized the importance of public input:

“It’s important that we strike the right balance between ensuring fares remain reasonable and affordable for passengers, while also reflecting the costs of operating a licensed vehicle so drivers are fairly rewarded.

We encourage residents, drivers, and other stakeholders to share their views on the current maximum taxi fares across North Yorkshire before the end of July.”
