A planned redevelopment of an historic pier in North Yorkshire is set to be completed by the end of 2028.

The work on Scarborough’s West Pier should be finished by November 2028, councillors have been told.

The multimillion-pound scheme includes plans for a building at the end of the pier to house four retail kiosks, public toilets, a store, welfare facilities and an electricity substation.

At a full meeting of North Yorkshire Council, Reform’s Cllr Tom Seston asked whether the scheme “constitutes good value for money?”

So far, the project has cost £1.7 million and is set to cost around £15 million overall.

Cllr Mark Crane, the executive member for open to business, said that because of the condition of the buildings and the state of the pier, he believed the project represented good value for money.

Speaking at the full meeting, he noted: “If the council had sat back and done nothing – and we inherited these, with the greatest of respect, from Scarborough Borough Council – then they would have continued to collapse, and we wouldn’t have a pier that is worth looking after.

“I believe that while it is a significant amount of money, it will leave Scarborough in a much better place at the end of it.

“We should be proud of Scarborough and everything that it offers this great county. I think it will be good value for money, even though the cost is very significant.”
