A teenager from Scarborough has been sentenced to three years in prison for stabbing a victim in the hand during an attempted robbery.

Appearing before York Crown Court on Tuesday (July 29th), Ali Thomas King from Scalby Gate in the Falsgrave Road area of the town was handed the sentence.

The court heard how on May 18th, a 19-year-old man had arranged to meet a friend together with King - as well as two other people - in Scarborough town centre.

Once everyone had arrived, King appeared to brandish a knife measuring 12-inches and lunged at the 19-year-old victim, demanding to give him money and threatening him.

Upon seeing the knife, the victim tried to run back to his home, resulting in King and two other teenagers chasing the unnamed victim down and attacking him.

During the attack, the victim tried to defend himself, where he was eventually stabbed in the hand, severing nerves which later required his hand to be reconstructed.

North Yorkshire Police were alerted to the incident, and later arrested King, together with another 19-year-old man. A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named due to legal reasons, was also arrested later in the day.

All three were eventually charged with wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm and and attempted robbery.

King pleaded guilty to both charges made against him before York Crown Court, while the other men pleaded guilty to attempted robbery - but not guilty to wounding with intent.

The 17-year-old suspect was ordered to carry out 60 hours of unpaid work, as well as receiving a youth referral and being subjected to electronic monitoring for three months; the 19-year-old suspect will be sentenced at a later date.

Speaking on King's ruling, Detective Constable Sam Rivers from North Yorkshire Police said: "his was a horrific attack in broad daylight, on a Sunday afternoon, right in the heart of Scarborough town centre.

“Every one of us has seen the devastation knife crime can cause. A split-second decision can ruin lives and, in this case, has left the victim with injuries and scaring both physical and mental that will likely last a lifetime.

“I would like to praise the victim who has stood up and fought for justice against the defendants. It has taken a lot of courage.

“I hope the sentences today can give the victim some closure and reassure the public that the police will not tolerate this type of behaviour on our streets and will do everything within our power to bring serious offenders to justice.”
