Scarborough is gearing up to host its popular annual Pancake Day event, where attendees can enjoy pancake races and seaside activities.

On Tuesday, 17th February, Cllr George Jabbour, chairman of North Yorkshire Council, will ring the Pancake Bell at midday on North Street to signal the start of the celebration.

Traditionally, the ringing of the Pancake Bell on Shrove Tuesday urged Scarborough housewives to begin frying pancakes—a symbolic act that continues to this day.

Spectators will flock to Aberdeen Walk for the races, followed by seaside skipping on the foreshore. Competitors, including many from local businesses, will don fancy dress and tackle the obstacle course for a chance to claim the coveted golden frying pan prize.

Cllr Jabbour expressed his excitement at ringing the Pancake Bell and cherishing the community event.

“It is a privilege to be asked to ring the bell to signal the start of the festivities," Jabbour said.

“This event is eagerly anticipated each year and keenly contested, and I look forward to meeting all those taking part and cheering on from the sidelines.”

Chris Golder, manager at Boyes in Scarborough, celebrated with the golden frying pan last year, shared his enthusiasm.

“The pancake race has been something we look forward to every year at Boyes," Golder said.

“It is a great event that we have been competing in for over 20 years. The crowds are great and really cheer the teams on, and it is a real tradition in Scarborough which makes it such a fun day.”
