Scarborough is marking 400 years since becoming a spa town with a diverse programme of cultural events, organised by North Yorkshire Council and local groups.

The celebrations will unfold throughout the year, with activities such as exhibitions, arts showcases, and community trails, highlighting the town's rich history and current appeal.

A lantern-making event will take place on 24th May at St. Mary's Church, welcoming children aged seven and over with accompanying adults.

A highlight comes in July with a centrepiece celebration at Scarborough Spa during the SeaFest weekend on 18th and 19th July, offering family arts activities and featuring handcrafted models inspired by the original spa pump room.

A silent disco supported by Visit North Yorkshire is scheduled for 8th August at Scarborough Spa, providing family-friendly and adult events.

This autumn's events include Moonlight on the Lake, featuring artist-designed lantern trails, with tickets available for Peasholm Park on 23rd and 24th October.

The year-long celebration culminates with the 10th edition of the community lantern parade as part of Scarborough Sparkle on 27th November.

Animated Objects, a Scarborough-based arts organisation, is leading the events in collaboration with the council and Arts Council England, offering engaging activities and workshops.

A striking new sculpture, Aqua Vitalis by Jethro Crabb, will be installed near the South Bay, inspired by Thomasin Farrer’s discovery of the town’s spa waters in 1626.

Lee Threadgold, artistic director at Animated Objects said: 'We want local communities to feel a real part of Scarborough 400 as this is an important milestone for the whole town that has helped shape the development of the British seaside holiday.

'We and other organisations across Scarborough have lined up a varied programme of events, so hopefully this will appeal to as many people as possible to enjoy what is on offer and to get involved themselves in helping to mark such an important anniversary for the town.'
