Tourism across York and North Yorkshire is set for a major boost as key industry leaders and local authorities launched a new strategic board aimed at strengthening the region’s £6 billion visitor economy.

The York and North Yorkshire Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) met for the first time this week, marking a significant milestone in a coordinated effort to promote tourism, support local businesses, and ensure sustainable growth throughout the region.

Chaired by the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, the new board brings together senior representatives from North Yorkshire Council, City of York Council, Visit North Yorkshire, Make It York, VisitEngland, and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. The initiative is part of a nationwide programme led by VisitEngland to enhance destination management and unlock the full potential of England’s visitor economy.

“From our historic towns and cities to our distinct coastline and National Parks, we have it all,” said Mayor Skaith. “Tourism adds £6 billion to our regional economy and supports over 54,000 jobs. This partnership champions the businesses at the heart of our region's must-see destinations and drives growth that benefits all our communities.”

Collaborative Vision for Sustainable Tourism

During its first meeting, the LVEP board discussed its core objectives: developing a strategic growth plan, crafting a regional partnership agreement, and aligning local efforts with wider initiatives across Yorkshire and the Humber. The partnership also aims to attract more visitors from overseas and encourage longer stays across North Yorkshire’s many attractions.

Cllr Mark Crane, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for open to business, highlighted the region’s appeal:

“We want to attract visitors to stay longer and enjoy all North Yorkshire has to offer, while ensuring tourism is sustainable and complements our communities.”

City of York Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy and culture, Cllr Pete Kilbane, said regional collaboration will enhance innovation and address shared challenges:

“York’s visitor economy is thriving, but we know that working together across the region will help us go further and faster.”

National and Local Support for the Initiative

VisitEngland director Andrew Stokes welcomed the LVEP’s launch, saying:

“We’re proud to support the York and North Yorkshire LVEP. This partnership will help the region remain a top destination for both domestic and international visitors.”

The National Trust’s Yorkshire operations director, Justin Scully, added that the collaboration will give frontline tourism workers a stronger voice in strategic decision-making.

The LVEP will hold meetings in different locations across the region to ensure local tourism businesses and stakeholders can engage directly with decision-makers. Monthly meetings of senior tourism officers are also underway to maintain momentum between board sessions.
