North Yorkshire firefighters to join international challenge honouring 9/11 heroes
Stair climb in Atlanta to commemorate 343 FDNY firefighters
Nine firefighters from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) are preparing to participate in an international challenge honouring the 343 firefighters who sacrificed their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
On 5th September 2026, the team will join peers from the UK, Ireland, the USA, and beyond for the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund Memorial Stair Climb in Atlanta, Georgia.
The event involves climbing 110 floors to replicate the height of the World Trade Centre towers, paying tribute to the FDNY firefighters lost on that tragic day.
North Yorkshire participants include Station Manager Mike Sutcliffe and other dedicated firefighters, who view the event as both a physical challenge and an opportunity to honour their fallen colleagues and support global emergency service charities.
Mike Sutcliffe commented:
“As firefighters, we understand the commitment that comes with serving our communities. Taking part in this memorial stair climb is a chance to honour FDNY firefighters while raising vital funds.”
Funds raised will support three charities aiding emergency service personnel and their families: The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund, The Fire Fighters Charity, and The Blue Light Card Foundation.
Chief Fire Officer Jonathan Dyson expressed pride in the team’s involvement and the cause:
“This is a global challenge, honouring those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. We are proud to support it.”
