North Yorkshire Fire Service maintains major incident as crews battle ongoing wildfire
An investigation into how the fire started is ongoing
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service says a wildfire that has been burning for weeks is still being treated as a major incident.
The Service says the fire is contained but not fully out, with deep-seated burning and sudden flare-ups continuing to pose risks.
Crews are warning people living nearby they may still see flames and smoke, which could cause temporary traffic disruption.
Special arrangements remain in place with contractors and landowners as fire breaks are strengthened and responsibilities are gradually handed back.
Officials say unexploded munitions in the area are adding to the dangers and restricting safe access.
The Service says keeping the incident classed as “major” allows them to adapt tactics and deploy resources quickly if conditions change.
An investigation into how the fire started is ongoing.
NYFRS has thanked farmers, gamekeepers, the Ministry of Defence, contractors and communities for their resilience, while praising the efforts of firefighters from across the country.
They are urging people to follow safety notices and continue to take updates from official sources.
