North Yorkshire Council launches New Year recruitment drive
Thousands of job opportunities promoted as part of national campaign
A major recruitment campaign has been launched to inspire people to make their next career move in 2026 by exploring diverse and rewarding job opportunities with North Yorkshire Council.
For the second consecutive year, North Yorkshire Council is partnering with the Local Government Association to promote the ‘Make a Difference, Work for your Local Council’ campaign, which aims to showcase the variety of roles available and the positive impact council employees have within their communities.
Wide-ranging opportunities
North Yorkshire Council provides essential services across England’s largest county, offering jobs in fields such as children’s services, adult care, environmental roles, art and culture, and technology.
Some of the opportunities highlighted in the campaign include:
Supporting children with special educational needs to help them fulfil their potential close to home
Helping provide care to 3,500 people in residential or nursing settings
Working in leisure and wellbeing hubs, such as group instructor roles
Assisting the council’s cultural and arts services, including venues like Scarborough Open Air Theatre
Roles in planning, engineering, waste collection, and carbon footprint reduction
Beyond frontline services, careers are available in finance, technology, human resources, legal, procurement, and business administration.
In the past year, the council advertised more than 3,700 vacancies for over 1,000 different job roles, averaging 310 vacancies monthly. Around 130 roles are available daily.
North Yorkshire Council leader, Cllr Carl Les, said:
“The recruitment campaign is important in enticing new talent into careers that provide services that residents rely on every day.
“From care workers to electricians, curators to group exercise instructors, and engineers to accountants, it takes a variety of skills and expertise to provide the services we offer.
“We offer a comprehensive rewards package for our staff, including competitive pay, generous annual leave, employer pension contributions, and hybrid working options to help achieve a better work-life balance.”
Stories from the workforce
Current council employees have shared their experiences to encourage others to consider local government careers:
Mental health social worker Kashmir Kaur said:
“I chose to work in local government because it allows me to make a tangible difference in people’s lives within my own community.
“The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the positive impact of my support, whether it’s helping someone regain confidence, access essential services, or feel heard during a difficult time.”
Senior engineer Julie Turner emphasised the opportunities for professional growth and the privilege of working with talented colleagues across different departments:
“I would recommend a career in local government. There are so many careers available, and even once you have a post, you can find other opportunities that might suit you even better.”
