A man from Scarborough has been sentenced to nine years in prison after assaulting three women in March, including his then girlfriend.

43-year-old Michael Kellett, of Northstead Flats, Scarborough, was also given a ten-year restraining order against his ex-partner.

The court heard how Kellet had attacked his partner as they waked home from a night out.

He then went on to beat her with a baseball bat inside their house before she ran away with her dog to the neighbour's.

Kellett also assaulted the neighbour and her friend, after they went to the house to tell him to leave.

He stomped on one of the women's face knocking out her tooth, and punched the other.

A North Yorkshire police spokesperson said, "He was arrested and whilst in police custody, he spat at an officer twice, and urinated and defecated in his cell."

Victim statement

The victim, Kellett's ex-partner, said in court, “I could not sleep, did not want to be on my own and felt on edge all the time. I felt I was constantly looking over my shoulder,”

She said she never imaged her then boyfriend would do something so violent to her.

“All three victims showed immense courage"

Detective Constable Catherine Peet of North Yorkshire Police, who led the investigation, said, “This was a terrifying attack on three women, one of whom was in a relationship with the offender. The initial assault occurred after a night out, when the victim returned home and asked Kellett to leave. He responded by hitting her in the face with a baseball bat.

“When she sought help from her neighbour and friend, they bravely went to her home to intervene. Kellett refused to leave and became aggressive, kicking one woman in the face and injuring both.

“All three victims showed immense courage in standing up to a violent bully and their bravery throughout the investigation and court proceedings is commendable. I’m pleased that Kellett is now behind bars where he belongs for a very long time and where he can’t cause further harm.”
