Public urged to report any flare-ups at Langdale Moor fire
The blaze is no longer being treated as a major incident
Authorities are warning the public to avoid Langdale and Fylingdales Moor amid ongoing risks from unexploded ordnance, following a large wildfire that has been burning since mid-August.
The fire has now been successfully contained for over three weeks with Chief Fire Officer Jonathan Dyson confirming that the major incident status has officially been lifted. However, the situation remains active, and fire crews will continue to monitor the area daily.
“There is still deep-seated heat within the peat,” said Dyson. “We urge the public to stay clear of the area and to call 999 immediately if they spot any flare-ups.”
Access restrictions remain in place due to both residual fire risk and the potential presence of unexploded military materials. Walkers and cyclists are being asked to follow all diversions and safety advice.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and further details will be shared in due course.
Chief Dyson also extended thanks to those who supported the emergency response: “We are incredibly grateful to the farmers, contractors, gamekeepers, partner agencies, other fire and rescue services, and local communities and businesses who worked tirelessly alongside us.”
The North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum Recovery Group is now leading and coordinating long-term recovery efforts across the area.
