North Yorkshire charity running online course to address child-to-parent abuse
IDAS say it's often a misunderstood issue
The domestic abuse charity IDAS is offering a online training course designed to equip professionals with the tools and knowledge needed to support families affected by child and adolescent to parent abuse (CAPVA).
This half-day session aims to help professionals identify signs, understand the complexities of CAPVA, and respond effectively. The issue, which involves controlling, threatening, or aggressive behaviour by a child or young person towards a parent or carer, is often misunderstood and under-reported.
Raising awareness
IDAS trainer Johura Zaman emphasised the importance of recognising and naming these abusive behaviours, which are often emotional or psychological but can also be physical.
“Child and adolescent parent abuse is happening, but it can be quite nuanced and layered. It’s important that professionals feel confident spotting the signs and knowing how to support families holistically.
“There is often a big stigma around this type of abuse. Parents can feel shame, fear, or judged, which is why they stay silent. But naming the behaviour is often the first step towards getting the right support, and our training helps professionals achieve that.”
Holistic support for families
“Parents experiencing this type of abuse often internalise it and ask themselves, ‘Have I done something wrong? Is this my parenting style?’ I’d really like to highlight that it’s nobody’s fault.
“We work with parents to ensure they are supported and have space to speak about their experiences, and we also work with the child to address factors contributing to their behaviour and help them find healthy coping mechanisms.”
Supporting professionals
The course is designed for professionals working with children, young people, or families in any setting. It provides insights into recognising signs of CAPVA, understanding its impact, and responding with sensitivity and confidence.
The training also encourages knowledge sharing and reflection, helping participants gain clarity on their role in addressing CAPVA and safeguarding families.
IDAS is the UK’s largest specialist domestic abuse charity, supporting individuals and families across Yorkshire and beyond. Its work includes education, advocacy, and prevention, focusing on creating safe environments and improving well-being.
