York City Council has secured nearly half a million pounds in Government funding to help address homelessness and provide targeted support to those at risk in the city.
The funding—totalling £479,438—will be used to prevent rough sleeping, offer tailored help to residents facing the most complex challenges, and improve access to safe accommodation. Council leaders say the new funds will help ensure homelessness in York is rare, brief, and non-recurring.
A significant portion of the funding will be directed towards supporting services run by voluntary, community, and faith organisations, enabling them to further their work in preventing homelessness and providing long-term support. The Council is also planning to strengthen its partnerships with these groups and develop new multi-agency approaches to tackle rough sleeping and street activity, especially in the city centre.
Ahead of the coming winter, the Council will use the money to prepare emergency accommodation and expand prevention services, with the goal of making sure fewer people sleep rough for the first time.
Cllr Michael Pavlovic, Executive Member for Housing, said: “Our new homelessness and rough sleeper strategy is to make homelessness brief, rare and non-recurring. We really welcome the additional funding from Government to further support the work our teams have already done this year. This includes supporting over three hundred households from losing their homes and helping those who have experienced homelessness to move into their own home.”
