Health advice issued in North Yorkshire as temperatures soar
Expert advice for staying cool and safe during heatwave
An amber weather warning for extreme heat is now in force across parts of North Yorkshire.
It covers areas including Selby with the Met Office warning the weather could bring significant disruption
James Crick is from the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board and has this advice: “We’re encouraging people to stay safe, cool, and hydrated, and to pay special attention to vulnerable groups such as older adults, young children, and those with existing health conditions.”
He detailed common-sense strategies for coping with the heat, saying, “Avoid the strongest sunlight, typically between 11am and 3pm, and prioritise hydration, while limiting alcohol, which isn’t effective in hydrating you.”
Highlighting the symptoms of heat exhaustion, he explained, “Watch for signs like dizziness, headaches, and excessive sweating. Immediate action can prevent escalation to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.”
He warned of the risks associated with open water during hot weather: “Cold water shock poses real dangers. Avoid alcohol when swimming, as it can impair judgment and safety."
“We are increasingly aware of risks related to skin cancers and cataracts from excessive UV exposure, underscoring the need for protective measures like sunglasses and sunscreen.”
He also emphasised the importance of safeguarding medications in high temperatures: “Ensure medication is stored in suitable conditions, possibly away from heat, to preserve effectiveness.”
“Please check on friends and neighbours, particularly those living alone, to ensure everyone enjoys a safe summer.”
