An investigation into a light aircraft crash that left a 70-year-old man dead in North Yorkshire is well advanced, according to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

The AAIB issued an update on its investigation into the loss of control of a Europa XS, registered G-BZNY, during take-off on 2nd November 2025.

The AAIB said: "The investigation into this accident is well advanced and the final report will be issued in due course."

What the AAIB said

The AAIB said the aircraft pitched up into a high nose-up attitude immediately after take-off.

It said the aircraft then departed controlled flight and struck the ground on the airfield.

What police said

North Yorkshire Police said the crash happened shortly before 1pm on Sunday 2nd November 2025 at Sherburn Aero Club in Sherburn-in-Elmet.

Police said the man, a 70-year-old from Leeds, was the sole occupant of the aircraft and was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been named.

A police spokesperson said at the time: "His family is currently being supported by specially-trained officers and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. The Air Accident Investigation Branch has been made aware."
