Nearly 200 arrested for drink and drug driving in North Yorkshire
Police enforcement highlights serious risk on local roads
In a focused five-week enforcement operation, North Yorkshire Police have made nearly 200 arrests related to drink and drug driving offences across York and North Yorkshire.
From 11th June to 19th July, police arrested 97 individuals on suspicion of drink driving and another 95 on suspicion of drug driving.
Additionally, 31 arrests occurred after motorists failed to provide samples for analysis.
Increasing their presence with high-visibility patrols, strategic stop checks, and roadside operations, officers intensified efforts at various locations within the force area.
Chief Inspector Tom Ibbetson reinforced a no-tolerance approach, stating, "There is no excuse for getting behind the wheel impaired."
Approximately 10% of arrests were linked to road traffic collisions, highlighting the danger posed to both the drivers themselves and others on the road.
More than a third of those arrested have already been charged and face impending court dates, while other cases await forensic blood analysis results.
The maximum penalty for causing death from dangerous driving under the influence is life imprisonment.
