Bird flu has been confirmed at a site in North Yorkshire.

Defra say Avian Influenza has been found in the Sutton-on-the-Forest area.

A 3km radius Protection Zone and 10km Surveillance Zone has been put in place by the government.

The risk to the public is low - but we're being warned not to pick up sick or dead birds.

If you find dead swans, geese, ducks or other wild birds such as gulls and birds of prey, you should report them to the Defra Helpline on 03459 335577.

Guidance for bird owners

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) will contact known poultry / captive bird owners to provide guidance as to the restrictions imposed by the Control Zone.

If you are in the Control Zone and you have poultry or other birds at your premises, you must adhere to the conditions and movement restrictions within the Protection Zone.

All poultry and captive birds must be housed, good bio-security must be maintained, movements are restricted and record keeping must be in place. Further information can be found on the government’s website.

Signs of avian influenza

If your birds become ill, consult your vet immediately. Avian influenza spreads through direct contact or contaminated fluids and faeces. Symptoms include:

swollen head and blue discolouration of the neck and throat

loss of appetite and diarrhoea

respiratory distress (gaping beak, coughing, sneezing, gurgling, rattling)

reduced egg production and increased mortality

By law, if you or your vet suspects that kept birds are showing any signs of disease it must be immediately reported to APHA by calling 03000 200 301.
