Spectacular air displays and parades set for Scarborough’s Armed Forces Day
Community to honour service personnel with full day of events
Scarborough is preparing for an exhilarating Armed Forces Day celebration on 27th June, complete with aerial displays, military performances, and ceremonial activities. The annual event, hosted by North Yorkshire Council as part of its support for the Armed Forces Covenant, will run from 11am to 5pm.
Thousands are expected to gather along the Yorkshire coast to express appreciation for the members of the Armed Forces community, including currently serving troops, service families, veterans, and cadets. Cllr Carl Les, North Yorkshire Council’s leader, remarked, “Scarborough Armed Forces Day is more than an event - it’s a show of unity, pride, and community spirit.”
A highlight of the day’s festivities are the military air displays, including performances from the RAF Typhoon and RAF Chinook. The schedule is as follows:
11.30am: RAF Chinook flypast opens the day
11.40am: RAF Tutor T Mark 1 with precision display
1.30pm: Hawker Fury showcasing a mid-afternoon spectacle
2.30pm: Calidus AutoGyro brings an agile gyroplane
3.30pm: RAF Supermarine Spitfire takes to Scarborough’s skies
4.05pm: RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 headlines with power and agility
On the ground, traditional military marches and bands, including the Queen’s Own Yeomanry and Yorkshire Volunteers Band, will entertain throughout the afternoon. Attractions feature a Chelsea Pensioners display, marking their debut at Scarborough Armed Forces Day.
Armed Forces champion Cllr Kevin Foster said, “It’s a wonderful opportunity for residents and visitors alike to come together and show their appreciation for those who serve... We’re very proud to host such an important celebration on our coastline.”
Army Cadets will lead the flag-raising at Scarborough Town Hall on 22nd June, officially opening the event. Sponsored by Skipton Building Society, the day aims to foster community solidarity and recognition for military personnel and their families.
