Appeal for information over offensive graffiti along the A64
Police say it's a long-standing issue
Police are appealing to members of the public, in the Ryedale area, to report offensive graffiti and to get in touch, if they have helped to clean it up at locations along the A64.
Officers have received a number of reports of racist, sexual and misogynistic messages painted on bus-shelters, fences, junction boxes and buildings, along a ten-mile stretch of the road, between West Knapton and Staxton Hill.
These have happened sporadically over the past six months, although police have investigated a number of similar incidents over several years.
However, it’s believed that there are more incidences recently than they are aware of, as community-minded members of the public have cleaned the graffiti as soon as they’ve become aware of it and, in some cases, it has not been reported.
If you see any incidents of graffiti, or have any information about who is responsible, please report it to the police as soon as you can and take a photograph if possible.
All of the messages are in similar writing to the one pictured above.
