A council report, titled “York Christmas Market Operating Hours and Economic Impact”, outlines plans for a possible six-day operating trial as the city looks to balance safety, security and the economic importance of the festive event.

The report considers recommendations around restricting the market’s opening days, following concerns linked to managing security at one of York’s busiest annual attractions.

Police are understood to have recommended a seven-day restriction, while the council report also looks at the option of trialling a weekly rest day, potentially on Tuesdays.

The proposal is being weighed against the possible financial impact on the city, with the report estimating that reduced operating hours could lead to a lost economic impact of between £2.6 million and £7.82 million.

York Christmas Market is a major part of the city’s festive calendar, attracting visitors from across the region and beyond. It also provides an important boost for local businesses, including shops, restaurants, hotels and visitor attractions.

The proposed trial would allow the council to assess whether a reduced operating schedule could help manage security pressures while still supporting the city centre economy during the busy Christmas period.

Any changes would be considered as part of wider planning for the 2026 event.

The report highlights the challenge facing the council in balancing public safety, operational pressures and the market’s role as a key driver of seasonal trade in York.
