Final chance for York organisations to apply for warm space grant
City of York Council is offering funding for community groups
As the deadline approaches, City of York Council is calling on community organisations to apply for the Good Place, Warm Place Fund to support the establishment of warm, welcoming spaces for residents during the winter months.
Grants of up to £5,000 are available from a total fund of £40,000, aiming to support venues that offer Warm Places for York residents. Applications for funding will close at midnight (4th October 2026.)
Importance of Warm Places
Warm Places play a vital role in offering safe, inclusive venues where residents can keep warm, connect with others, and access practical support during colder months.
Targeting those impacted by the cost of living, social isolation, or simply seeking a friendly place to spend time, Warm Places must be open for at least two hours each week to be eligible for funding.
Many locations provide additional benefits, such as offering advice on managing household costs, enhancing income, and accessing local support services. Some Warm Places also offer free or low-cost refreshments, meals, or Pay-As-You-Feel cafés, removing financial stress for residents seeking companionship.
Last year, grants were awarded to 28 organisations across 16 wards, enabling groups to establish new Warm Places, expand existing provisions, and improve facilities for local residents. Funding covered food supplies, kitchen equipment, and venue running costs like heating.
Council’s call to action
Councillor Katie Lomas, City of York Council’s Executive Member for Finance, Performance, Major Projects, Human Rights, Equality and Inclusion, emphasised the benefits of Warm Places: "They offer friendship, support and a sense of belonging, helping people stay connected with their local community."
Organisations interested in running a Warm Place, or considering offering one, can request an application form by emailing [email protected] or contacting their local ward Community Officer.
