City of York Council strengthens ties with Lviv amid celebrations
The City of York is set to demonstrate its solidarity with Ukraine by lighting the city walls in blue and yellow for Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day celebrations on Monday, 24th August 2026.
Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ambassador of Ukraine, has requested support from City of York Council to mark the occasion.
York is not only reinforcing its support for Ukrainian residents but is also working to forge closer ties with the city of Lviv.
Councillor Claire Douglas, Leader of City of York Council, expressed her commitment:
“Ukraine’s independence is internationally recognised and enshrined in law, and our commitment to this continues resolutely."
She added:
“The resilience and resolve of the Ukrainian people continues to inspire us, as they stand up for their liberty and independence.”
York’s gesture underscores its ongoing dedication to assisting Ukrainians and supporting their culture and independence amid the continuing conflict.
