Mayor announces development zones to drive regeneration in North Yorkshire
New initiative focuses on boosting jobs, housing, and regional growth
A new report proposes the creation of three Mayoral Development Zones (MDZs) in York and North Yorkshire to accelerate regeneration, job creation, and housing opportunities.
Ahead of a Combined Authority meeting on 2nd July, the plan outlines targeted development in Scarborough, the Selby Growth Zone, and York Central, aiming to attract significant investment and enhance community well-being.
MDZs enable the Mayor, through devolution, to prioritise areas for development by uniting developers, landowners, and local authorities in pursuit of public and private sector funding.
An initial £10 million MDZ Regeneration Fund is proposed to initiate development phases and secure further investment.
The zones include initiatives like creating over 7,000 jobs in the Selby Growth Zone, delivering 2,500 homes in York Central, and revitalising Scarborough, including leisure and tourism enhancements.
Mayor David Skaith stated, "This is about using the full powers available to make a real difference to people’s everyday lives by promoting good jobs, affordable homes, and thriving communities."
North Yorkshire Council’s leader, Cllr Carl Les, emphasised collaboration, noting, "We will continue to work closely within the combined authority to ensure these plans deliver real benefits to our residents and businesses."
City of York Council’s leader, Cllr Claire Douglas, welcomed the initiative for York Central, identifying it as a transformational project offering affordable homes and well-paid jobs.
The initiative is aimed at delivering regional growth and helping residents access quality opportunities and sustainable living environments.
