Yorkshire farmer Tom Pearcy has cut over 5km of pathways into his 15-acre field of over a million maize (corn) plants as a tribute to Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday this year.

Covering an area the size of 8 Wembley football pitches York Maze is believed to be the biggest maze in Europe and one of the largest in the world.

When viewed from the air this year's York Maze design features a giant image of Attenborough together with an Elephant, Tiger and a Gorilla.

At 100m in diameter it is believed to be the biggest image of David Attenborough ever created.

More than a million maize seeds were planted in the 15-acre field, and the image was cut once the plants started to emerge.

The image of Sir David emerged in the maze of pathways once the crop was fully grown in time for the attraction opening to the public on Saturday.

Previous designs for the maze have included Toy Story, Tutankhamun, a Lego minifigure, The Lion King, Star Wars and Doctor Who.

Tom Pearcy, the York Maze creator says;

“I grew up watching David Attenborough’s nature programmes, he is an icon of British broadcasting and I’m honoured to make my contribution to his 100th birthday celebrations."

The Sir David Attenborough 100 years on Planet Earth Maze will be open for visitors to explore from Saturday 11th July to Thursday 3rd September 2026 after which the crop will be harvested.
