A recent study by the Centre for Cities has found that York has the lowest proportion of young people not in employment, education or training, known as Neets, among the largest cities in England.

According to the research, only 6% of York’s youth fall into the Neet category, making it one of the most promising urban areas in terms of youth employment and training opportunities.

This positive figure highlights York’s relatively successful approach to providing employment and education options for its younger population.

Rob Johnson, senior analyst at the Centre for Cities, noted York’s advantageous position, indicating that local solutions play a key role in addressing the Neet challenge.

Johnson commented, "York presents a contrasting scenario with a much lower figure compared to other cities, which shows the importance of tailored local strategies."

The study advocates for understanding and replicating successful elements of York’s approach to tackle youth unemployment and lack of educational engagement in other cities facing higher Neet figures.

The findings suggest that a focus on strengthening local economies and enhancing opportunities can help reduce Neet rates across England.
