York's parks, playgrounds, and public green spaces are set to benefit from a £500,000 funding boost, the City of York Council has announced today.

This investment, spread over two years, will be used to refresh outdoor areas across the city, making them more accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for all local residents.

It marks the largest commitment to improving public spaces in York for several years, responding directly to community feedback and priorities set in the Council Plan 2023–2027.

Councillor Jenny Kent, Executive Member for Environment and Climate Emergency, said: "Investing in parks isn't just about upgrading play equipment or paths. It's about supporting healthier communities, improving mental wellbeing, and creating spaces everyone can enjoy. York residents have clearly told us how important these green spaces are, and we’re committed to ensuring they remain vibrant and welcoming."

The council plans to prioritise areas that in most need, especially where play facilities and green spaces have aged or where access to these spaces is limited. This aligns with the council's wider commitment to promoting equality, health, and wellbeing across the community.

Work will also include assessing the condition and conservation needs of York's historic War Memorials.

The council is now reviewing potential projects, with final decisions on specific improvements expected this September.
