York grandfather quit smoking after 40 years and urges others to join Stoptober
Free support helps people take the first step to quit.
A York grandfather who smoked for more than 40 years is encouraging others to quit during Stoptober, thanks to free support from York's Health Trainers.
Kevin, 62, started smoking at 18, a habit which eventually developed into a serious addiction, with him smoking up to 80 cigarettes a day.
Thinking about his children, grandchildren and his future health provided Kevin the motivation he needed to quit.
He said, "Smoking didn't make me feel great. I woke up every day with a cough and struggled to walk up the stairs. I was gasping for breath and worried about my health."
Kevin made quitting his New Year's resolution and smoked his last cigarette on 31st December 2025.
With the help of York Health Trainers Stop Smoking Service, Kevin used nicotine patches and a vape to assist with his quitting journey.
"The support made a huge difference. Within two weeks I already felt much better. I could get up the stairs more easily, and my cough had improved," Kevin said.
Now supporting Stoptober, he emphasises how quitting smoking helped him reclaim his life and health.
Councillor Lucy Steels-Walshaw, Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care at City of York Council, stated, "Kevin's story shows that it's never too late to quit smoking and start seeing the benefits. Stoptober is a great opportunity to take that first step."
Dr Emma Hardy, GP and Public Health Specialty Registrar in Yorkshire and Humber, highlighted the support available: "There are different ways to get support, and it's about finding what works for you."
York residents can access free one-to-one support through the York Health Trainers Stop Smoking Service. Additionally, they can enjoy six months of free access to all the features on the Smoke Free app, including free stop-smoking aids valued up to £300.
