A man who made fake education and professional certificates has been jailed for three years after being sentenced at York Crown Court.

David Grundy, 61, of Coton Avenue, Stafford, was sentenced after a prolonged investigation by the National Trading Standards eCrime Team, revealing a worldwide scheme that generated £900,000 selling counterfeit qualifications.

Operating a fraudulent service with his brother for over a decade, Grundy's operation involved producing fake education and professional certificates, enabling individuals to secure skilled jobs despite lacking qualifications.

After pleading guilty to fraudulent trading at York Magistrates’ Court, the investigation identified thousands of counterfeit certificates marketed through an online platform, offering "high quality" forgeries from UK and international institutions for substantial fees, some exceeding £1,000 per certificate.

In December 2021, a Trading Standards warrant led to the seizure of specialist forgery equipment and records of nearly 300 customers at Grundy's residence.

The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) played a crucial role, instructing solicitors to warn Grundy to cease operations—a directive he ignored.

Lord Michael Bichard, Chairman of National Trading Standards, stated, "This operation offered a dangerous shortcut into highly skilled work. It puts the public at risk and defrauds honest businesses."

A JCQ spokesperson said: "Fake certificates undermine that effort and today's outcome reflects how serious and unacceptable this activity is."

North Yorkshire Council's Executive Member, Cllr Richard Foster, highlighted the potential dangers, noting, "Particularly concerning is the risk posed by the fake Disclosure and Barring checks."
