York Disability Week is set to run from today (29th November) to 6th December, featuring more than 30 in-person and online events aimed at creating an inclusive and accessible city for everyone.

Designed for both disabled and non-disabled people, the week includes free and low-cost activities such as wheelchair rugby, accessible football, tennis, gym and dance lessons, inclusive cycling and rambling, and tours of York City FC’s accessible stadium.

Creative workshops will explore woodworking, self-advocacy skills, and acting opportunities with York Theatre Royal. Singing and signing choirs, book clubs, and art exhibitions will also take place.

An Information Fair will provide details on services and organisations available locally, alongside advice sessions for carers, talks about direct payments, and informal coffee meetups for disabled parents and those living with Parkinson’s.

Talks and discussions will cover diverse topics such as learning disabilities, digital technology challenges, mental health stories, energy-limiting conditions, and the history and implications of eugenics.

The co-ordinating group for the week said: “Whether disabled yourself, a family member, PA or carer, a business keen to be more accessible, or just interested in learning more and meeting new people, York Disability Week has something for everyone. By participating, you’ll be joining a movement to foster a more inclusive York, extend your learning or simply have fun!”

Printed programmes are available at libraries and community centres across York or can be requested in large print and braille by emailing [email protected] or calling 01904 702060. Programmes can also be downloaded at yorkdisabilityweek.org.
