City of York Council's Health Trainer service has launched the Healthy Families Service, a new initiative aimed at enhancing the physical and emotional wellbeing of York families.

Offered at no cost, this service focuses on making small lifestyle changes that collectively foster significant improvements in family health and happiness.

Led by Health Trainers Katie and Donna, the program allows families to engage in six voluntary sessions designed to fit seamlessly around everyday life.

The sessions cover various aspects of wellbeing, including budget-friendly healthy eating, improving sleep routines, engaging in fun family activities, building emotional resilience, and setting achievable goals.

Families are encouraged to build on existing strengths with step-by-step guidance from the Health Trainers, who tailor the support to the specific needs of each family.

Families can choose to meet with Health Trainers at their home, school, online, community center, library, or local park.

All family members, including kids, grandparents, and even pets, are welcome to participate.

Cllr Lucy Steels-Walshaw, Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing, and Adult Social Care, emphasised the importance of accessible health support.

"This service is about helping every family in York live healthier, happier lives. By offering friendly, personalised support in the places where people feel most at ease, we’re making good health more accessible and giving children the best possible start," Steels-Walshaw said.

Peter Roderick, Director of Public Health at City of York Council, highlighted how the service addresses current challenges faced by families.

“We know many children and young people are struggling with disrupted routines, poor sleep, and the pressures of digital life. This service responds directly to those challenges - giving families the guidance, encouragement and space they need to build positive habits together,” Roderick added.

Families can initiate participation by self-referring or being referred by a healthcare professional.
