York councillors to debate reducing Christmas market days for improved city access

One idea is to have a 'rest day' on Tuesday

York City Council is set to discuss potential changes to the operation of the city's Christmas market later. The council and its partners are considering implementing measures to enhance access to York’s city centre during the festive season.

Among the options up for discussion is the introduction of a rest day on Tuesdays, traditionally a quieter day in terms of footfall at the market. This proposal aims to enable residents and visitors to access the city centre as they would at other times of the year.

Councillor Pete Kilbane, Deputy Leader of City of York Council, highlighted the importance of maintaining both accessibility and safety during the Christmas period:

“York is the most Christmassy place to be which is why it’s enjoyed by residents and visitors from all around the world. At a special time of year with the winter lights and Christmas Market, it’s just a fantastic place to be.

However, this isn’t the case for everyone. We know that some people can feel cut off from the city centre at this time of year and this can’t continue.

This report looks to explore our options to improve access to the city centre in a way which also keeps the city safe. This includes looking at rest days for the market to support those who need to get into the city centre for everyday needs such as banking services, and for leisure such as enjoying York’s amazing retail and hospitality offer.”

On rest days, the city centre would operate as ‘business as usual,’ with access for Blue Badge holders being permitted, unless exceptional circumstances arise such as a national security threat. On the days when the market is operational, vehicle restrictions in the footstreet area would remain in line with police-recommended measures.

If the proposal for a six-day-a-week market is approved, a trial will take place during the 2026 Christmas Market, with further considerations for 2027 and beyond based on its evaluation.
