Bicycle thefts in York have fallen by 15% in the past year thanks to a dedicated neighbourhood policing operation

Officers have been carrying out proactive patrols, working with CCTV operators and using specialist tracker bikes to catch offenders. They’ve also teamed up with partners to run free bike-marking events, helping reunite stolen cycles with their owners. Since April, more than 800 bikes in York have been marked with the national BikeRegister system.

The crackdown has already led to arrests and convictions, including a 32-week prison sentence for one prolific thief. Police say they will continue to disrupt offenders and are urging residents to take advantage of the free bike-marking events to protect their cycles.

Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Jen Stockwell said:

“York is a cycling city, and tackling bike theft is a clear priority for us. We’re making it harder for thieves to operate and encouraging cyclists to take simple steps to safeguard their bikes.”
