Women’s Rugby World Cup Returns to the community Stadium in York tonight, Boosting Local Interest
Excitement is building as the Women’s Rugby World Cup returns to York this evening at 7:30 PM, when Australia take on the USA in what promises to be another thrilling fixture in the tournament.
The return of the competition to the city is not just about top-level rugby—it’s also helping raise awareness of the sport at a grassroots level.
Abigail Lambert, Co-Captain of the York Women’s Rugby Team, says the tournament is inspiring more people to take notice of women’s rugby:
"Its fantastic and there is such a buzz in the entire city, so many girls and women are getting involved, participating and trying things out.
"I googled my local club when I was 24, rocked up one day, I didn't know anyone and never looked back and 4 years later I'm co-captain."
Lambert also shared hopes of involving more local secondary schools in rugby, aiming to spark interest among younger generations and grow the game in the community.
Abigail added:
"I'm hoping to have our secondary schools involved in a tournament this year from York. It would be great to get them trying it out because you get so much more from rugby than you think."
With big matches and growing local enthusiasm, women’s rugby is making a lasting impact both on and off the pitch.
