Police have dealt with a number of vehicles stuck due to snow and ice north of Pickering.

The North Yorkshire force said treacherous conditions on Friday night (2 January) had led to a number of drivers becoming stranded.

They added that roads around Goathland were extremely difficult and Wheeldale Road had become impassable.

In a statement, North Yorkshire Police said: "Our officers are attending the location in police 4x4 vehicles, and working hard to ensure everyone is safe.

"Please avoid this area. The conditions are treacherous, and bear in mind that mobile phone coverage may be poor.

"If you're travelling in the North York Moors area tonight, consider finding alternative routes, or postponing your journey."
