Two charged after theft and criminal damage at church in North Yorkshire

Two young people have been charged following an investigation into a series of theft and criminal damage offences committed across Ryedale, Scarborough and York.

The investigation, led by Ryedale Neighbourhood Policing Team, followed reports of theft and criminal damage at a church.

Following enquiries, the two teenagers were identified and interviewed by police in connection with the offences. Both have since been charged and are due to appear at court on 29 September 2026.

Police say they have been granted bail with strict conditions, including restrictions on contacting each other, entering certain commercial premises and visiting specific locations within North Yorkshire.

Inspector Martin Dennison, of Ryedale Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:

"We recognise the impact these offences have had on local communities and understand the concern they have caused, particularly for businesses, places of worship and residents.

"I hope this outcome provides reassurance that reports of crime are taken seriously. Our officers have carried out a thorough investigation, gathered evidence and taken positive action to bring those responsible before the courts.

"Alongside enforcement activity, we continue to work closely with youth justice services and other partner agencies to address offending behaviour, safeguard those involved and help prevent further incidents.

"We would encourage residents, businesses and victims to continue reporting crime and sharing information with us. Information from our communities is invaluable in helping us identify offenders, build investigations and keep people safe."
