Thousands of runners are taking to the streets of York today for the annual Yorkshire Marathon.

The Altra Yorkshire Marathon's scenic route is a flat and fast course over 26.2 miles taking in some amazing views of the city including York Minster.

People run for many reasons—some for the challenge, others for the joy—but for many, it’s something more.

Behind many running shoes is a story: of love, loss, and remembrance.

Events like the Yorkshire Marathon bring thousands of people together not just to race, but to run for someone they love or a cause close to their heart —turning the course into a moving tribute filled with emotion, strength, and shared humanity.

Kirsty Catterson is taking part and only started running six months ago after struggling mentally following the death of a friend.

Kirsty Said:

"I feel more positive and everyone at work can tell that I've been running, my mental health and everything, they say there is like an aura around me now"

To safeguard runners, a number of roads will be closed or have restrictions throughout the day so if you are heading out its best to check your route before you travel.

You can find the road closures and travel options here.

Its an active weekend across North Yorkshire as the Yorkshire 10mile race also sets off at 10.15am from the University of York, meanwhile the Yorkshire Coast 10K will see runners follow the coastal route around South Bay, past the harbour, round the headland and into North Bay.
