Tadcaster bus station has been given a £500,000 make over.

Funded by the Government’s Town Centre Revitalisation Fund, the project includes significant upgrades to the station’s facilities and surrounding area, making it more accessible for residents and visitors alike.

New features for Tadcaster’s gateway

Key improvements at Tadcaster Bus Station include:

Full renovation of the station’s structure and renewal of the canopy

Widened pathways and relocated lighting columns

Installation of electronic boards displaying real-time bus information

Restoration of the building’s stonework

Addition of a Changing Places public toilet to improve accessibility for all users

The surrounding area, including the adjacent Tadkebab fast food building, has also been deep cleaned and renovated as part of the scheme.

Cllr Malcolm Taylor, executive member for highways and transportation, emphasised the station’s importance in welcoming visitors to the town. He said:

“The bus station is the gateway to the town and the first thing that visitors see when they arrive.

“Improving the facilities in Tadcaster is part of our wider commitment to give residents a more accessible, integrated and reliable public transport network, which allows them to travel easily and affordably across England’s largest geographic county.

“This refurbishment gives people more choice over how they travel while boosting connectivity, health, and the local economy.”

Supporting the local economy

Feedback from residents and businesses helped shape the plans for upgrading the bus station, with a focus on creating a more inviting town centre for visitors.

Cllr Mark Crane, executive member for economic development and regeneration, said:

“By improving the facilities at Tadcaster Bus Station, we can make the gateway to the town more accessible for all users and drive more footfall, meaning visitors will stay longer, spend more, and support local businesses.

“It’s imperative that we do everything we can to ensure our town centres and high streets remain vibrant hubs for business and trade, attracting visitors from across the county and beyond.”

Improvements welcomed by operators

The project has been praised by Coastliner, which operates three buses per hour connecting Tadcaster to other North Yorkshire locations.

Adam Emmott, general manager of Coastliner, said:

“Having a safe and comfortable waiting environment is crucial for our customers, and these changes reflect an ongoing commitment to enhancing their travel experience.”
