Scarborough station improvement plans risk losing £1m investment
Redevelopment proposal delayed over safety concerns.

A £1 million investment aimed at enhancing Scarborough's railway station is at risk if councillors reject a proposed redevelopment plan.
The Station Gateway project, returning for a vote after deferral in August, faces scrutiny over passenger drop-off and pedestrian safety concerns.
Councillors have been cautioned that a refusal could potentially forfeit a further £1 million, offered by TransPennine Express for internal station improvements.
North Yorkshire Council's Station Gateway plan envisions modernising the Grade II-listed station's forecourt with public seating, taxi ranks, drop-off areas, and a pedestrian plaza, alongside changes to accessible parking.
The plans, initially approved in 2023, have expired, prompting a recommendation for approval at the meeting on Thursday, 8th October.
The revised submission incorporates changes such as widening and raising the pedestrian crossing and using contrasting materials to enhance visibility.
Additional adjustments include extending the pedestrian route adjacent to accessible parking bays and adding textured wayfinding for visually impaired users.
A new pedestrian plaza is proposed outside the station, preserving the taxi rank and Blue Badge spaces.
In response to concerns about station-front drop-off access, North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that Westborough Car Park will provide public pick-up and drop-off facilities.
Directional signage will guide drivers and pedestrians between the car park, station, and town centre.
The revamped layout promises improved pedestrian safety and accessibility through more coherent and safeguarded routes.
The planning documents indicate a substantial increase in pedestrian public realm space from 1,266 to 2,450 square metres.
Future development phases could further enhance pedestrianisation and transportation hub capacity, though funding has not yet been secured.
Discussions continue within the Strategic Group, featuring senior members from Network Rail, TransPennine Express, the Combined Authority, the Neighbourhood Board, and North Yorkshire Council.
