Scarborough bus makers set to strike over pay
Industrial action planned due to dissatisfaction with wage offers
Bus makers employed by Alexander Dennis in Scarborough will strike over pay dissatisfaction starting from 25th June until 1st July 2026.
Approximately 400 workers, represented by Unite, the UK's leading union, have rejected a four per cent pay increase offer from the company.
The workers voted in favour of strike action due to the impact of rising living costs combined with years of inadequate pay increases.
According to Unite, between August 2021 and May 2026, the Retail Prices Index rose by approximately 35.1 per cent, contributing to a real terms fall in wages by 19.8 per cent.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham expressed complete support for the strike, stating: "These workers have suffered a dramatic drop in their real terms pay. They have had enough. Alexander Dennis needs to put forward a pay increase that reflects their loyalty, hard work and patience."
Unite regional officer Dan Stephens said: "There is still time for Alexander Dennis to avoid industrial action and the disruption it will cause, but that will require an offer our members can accept."
The factory's operations will shut down during industrial action, with further strike dates planned if the dispute remains unresolved.
