Pothole repairs completed on Hull Road in York after cold weather damage
Exposed cables and damaged road surface prompt council action
POTHOLES which emerged on a major road through York following recent cold weather and exposed cabling have prompted council repairs.
City of York Council workers repaired the potholes in Hull Road, near the junction with Tang Hall Lane, on Thursday, January 29.
Andrew Mortimer, a Liberal Democrat activist in the Hull Road, said yellow armoured cables had been exposed after parts of the road disintegrated.
Council Environmental Services Director Dave Atkinson said there had been an unfortunate increase in road damage following cold and wet weather and repairs were happening as quickly as possible.
Mr Mortimer told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) works to repair the potholes had caused some delays in the area.
The Liberal Democrat said: “There has been a big increase in potholes due to the recent cold spell.
“One of the worst areas affected is Hull Road near the junction with Tang Hall Lane.
“There are large areas of the road surface that have disintegrated and in at least three locations it has exposed a yellow armoured cable.”
Council Environmental and Regulatory Services Director Mr Atkinson said repairs in Hull Road were quickly completed on Thursday following a routine inspection.
He added the council was committed to keeping road users safe using available funding, with timescales for repairs depending on the severity of the issue.
The director said: “We know that potholes can present hazards for anyone, no matter how they are travelling.
“While we have unfortunately seen more damage to the roads recently due to wet and cold weather, we continue to identify and repair problems as quickly as possible, to keep the highway network safe and available for use.
“The council carries out regular safety inspections throughout the year and surveys of all roads and footways for which we are responsible.
“Where the defects meet the criteria, reactive repairs are undertaken.
“The council also carries out proactive maintenance work, with areas identified by an annual condition survey of the whole network, which establishes the structural condition of the roads.
“This prioritised programme of capital works pro-actively renews and repairs our highways fairly to ensure they are in good condition for all users.”
