Police issue prevention advice amid rise in cable and copper thefts
Businesses and communities urged to reinforce security.
Following a surge in cable and copper thefts across the Yorkshire Coast and Ryedale areas, police are urging the public to enhance security measures and remain vigilant.
These thefts are causing substantial disruption, financial loss, and safety risks, making it crucial for communities and businesses to report any suspicious activities promptly.
Signs of potential criminal activity include unmarked vehicles or unfamiliar individuals near access points or storage facilities and suspicious behaviour from employees or contractors.
Other indicators are gaps in perimeter fences, unauthorized work during off-hours, and graffiti markings.
To bolster security, authorities advise ensuring CCTV systems are operational, alarm monitoring companies have up-to-date contact information, and perimeter access points are secured.
The community is encouraged to engage with local businesses and report any unusual activity, regardless of how minor it may seem.
Suspicious activity or theft incidents can be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111, or directly to police. For ongoing crimes, dial 999, or call 101 for non-emergencies.
