It happened at around 10.45pm, where the A168 joins the southbound carriageway of the A1, at junction 49. A black Skoda Octavia lost control on the southbound slip road and crashed into the central reservation.

Two occupants of the Skoda fled the scene, with one running across the northbound carriageway and being struck by a lorry traveling north. The man suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to hospital, where he remains.

The second occupant ran into nearby woodland, but was located and arrested shortly after the incident.

Police are asking motorists who witnessed the crash, saw the Skoda prior to the incident, or spotted the two men running across carriageways to come forward. They are particularly interested in dashcam footage that may aid the investigation.
