North Yorkshire launches water safety videos with firefighter Toni
New initiative encourages safe practices around rivers and lakes
North Yorkshire Council and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have partnered to launch a new series of water safety videos aimed at promoting safe behaviour around open water this summer.
The campaign features Toni, a firefighter from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, who shares insights into hidden hazards beneath the surface of local rivers and lakes.
The initiative aims to raise awareness and reduce water-related incidents throughout North Yorkshire by encouraging viewers to understand the risks involved and adopt simple precautions.
Residents and visitors can access the water safety videos on the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service website, and they will be actively shared across both organisations' social media platforms over the summer.
Officials emphasise that warm weather makes open water enticing, but emergencies involving water are common and have occasionally led to tragic outcomes.
Water Safety Advice
Authorities urge individuals to take extra care and consider potential risks before entering the water.
Dangers such as hidden objects, strong currents, cold water shock, and sudden depth changes can pose threats even to skilled swimmers.
To reduce risk:
- Enter the water gradually to acclimatise to the temperature.
- Opt for supervised locations with lifeguards when possible.
- Heed warning signs and safety information.
- Opt for supervised locations with lifeguards when possible.
Avoid swimming alone, and inform someone of your whereabouts.
In case of an emergency, call 999 immediately. Request the Coastguard if at the coast or the Fire and Rescue Service if inland.
Under no circumstances should individuals attempt a rescue themselves.
