North Yorkshire Police are reminding residents, farmers, and businesses to remain alert against fuel theft, following a rise in fuel prices that has made items like diesel, heating oil, and fuel targets for criminals.

Fuel theft impacts victims significantly, particularly in rural communities reliant on fuel for vehicles, agricultural machinery, and heating. Criminals often cause damage while targeting parked vehicles, storage tanks, and commercial premises.

To aid communities in preventing fuel theft, North Yorkshire Police share the following advice:

Park securely in locked garages or well-lit areas with CCTV when possible.

Lock fuel caps and consider anti-siphon devices for vehicles and machinery.

Secure fuel storage tanks with fencing, locks, lighting, and CCTV.

Regularly check fuel levels and promptly report unexplained losses.

Mark fuel tanks and containers with postcodes or business details where feasible.

Install alarms on fuel tanks, especially in remote locations.

Stay vigilant for any suspicious activity, especially near parked vehicles, farms, estates, or fuel storage areas at odd hours. Report suspicious behaviour immediately; call 999 for ongoing crimes and 101 or online for non-emergencies.

Jamie Manson, North Yorkshire Police PC, Scarborough Rural, encourages communities to "Stay alert, secure your fuel, and help us keep our communities safe."

Individuals with information about fuel theft or suspicious activities should contact North Yorkshire Police with relevant details.
