Train services in North Yorkshire will see significant changes as the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) undertakes essential bridge replacement work at Common Lane, Church Fenton.

The work involves replacing a life-expired railway bridge, allowing for the installation of overhead line equipment necessary for future electric trains between York, Leeds, Huddersfield, and Manchester.

On the weekends of 10th-11th October and 24th October to 1st November, bus services will replace trains between York and Leeds.

During the weekend of 17th-18th October, trains between York and Leeds will be diverted via Castleford.

Buses will also replace trains between Darlington, York, and Doncaster on the weekends of 24th-25th October and 31st October-1st November, as engineers conduct improvements on the East Coast Main Line.

Lucy Grogan, TRU sponsor, highlighted the importance of the bridge replacement for delivering greener, electrified services, with teams working round-the-clock on the project.

Carl Harland, TRU Customer Lead for Northern, acknowledged the disruption but emphasized the necessity of the work as a step towards unlocking future benefits for the region.

He advised customers to check their journeys and allow extra time, with rail replacement buses in operation where necessary.

Following the completion of the new bridge installation, additional utility service relocations will be conducted within the new structure before the road is restored and reopened by June 2027.
